Govt saddened with succession wrangles

Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister, Nkandu Luo, says government is saddened by the succession disputes that continue to rock chiefdoms soon after the death of an incumbent chief.

Prof Luo has observed that there are a number of succession disputes which have dragged on for many years simply because rival factions claiming to be heirs to the throne cannot agree on who should be the next chief.

She says already some people in Itezhi Tezhi district have risen against chief Chilyabufu while the chief Mweemba succession dispute has dragged on for over 18 years now.

Prof says it is sad that rich people in towns are the ones causing problems in chiefdoms at the expense of the poor.

The Minister was speaking at Kanchomba in Pemba April 13th at the installation of Dickson Muyeeka as new chief Hamaundu.

The chiefdom has been embroiled in a succession dispute for over ten years now.

Prof Luo said the Patriotic Front Government recognises that chiefs play an important role in facilitating social economic development in rural areas.

She said it is for this reason that government wants to use traditional structures to reach out to the people.

Speaking earlier, chief Monze praised the PF Government for finding a lasting solution to the protracted wrangling in the Hamaundu chiefdom.

Speaking on behalf of chiefs in the province, chief Monze said the action taken by the PF government to recognize Dickson Muyeeka as new chief Hamaundu is a welcome development that will bring about stability to the chiefdom that was embroiled in prolonged succession disputes.

Several chiefs and District Commissioners from various districts in the province attended the ceremony held near Kachomba farmers’ training institute.
