CONFUSION has continued to rock the MMD with party officials publicly differing over holding of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
MMD national youth secretary Tobias Kafumukache, who is also a NEC member, differed with Lusaka Province chairperson Watson Mtonga at a press briefing last Friday at which Kafumukache condemned plans to hold a NEC meeting.
Mr Mtonga, who is the party provincial chairperson, stormed the MMD secretariat shortly after Mr Kafumukache’s press briefing at which he condemned the national youth secretary’s actions.
But when contacted for a comment, Mr Kafumukache vowed not to be intimidated by Mr Mtonga who he said was too junior to challenge him.
He explained that the press briefing was an avenue of appealing to the party president Nevers Mumba not to call for the NEC meeting scheduled for next week.
Mr Kafumukache explained that the NEC meeting was a recipe for bloodshed because the youth in Lusaka want party president Dr Nevers Mumba to resign.
“The youths in Lusaka want Dr Mumba to resign or call for an extraordinary meeting.
“So, if that NEC meeting went ahead, the youths may take advantage of the situation and cause confusion at the meeting,” he said.
Mr Kafumukache said the NEC meeting was also illegal as it was not called by the secretariat which had the full mandate.
He also explained that the youths did not want Mr Mumba to continue as party president accusing him of failing to give direction to the party membership.
However, Mr Mtonga said he was ready to take Mr Kafumukache on and ensure that he stopped him from confusing in the party.
He said a NEC meeting was the only avenue through which differences in the party would be resolved.
Acting national secretary Chembe Nyangu refused to comment over the matter saying he was too annoyed to comment.
Efforts to get comments from MMD vice-president Michael Kaingu and party spokesperson Dora Siliya proved futile as their phones went unanswered.
And MMD founding member Katele Kalumba has joined calls for MMD party president Nevers Mumba to call for an extraordinary convention to save the party from collapse.
Dr Kalumba who is also former MMD National Secretary said Dr Mumba should save the former ruling party from collapse by calling for an extraordinary convention where party members would choose leaders they feel could lead the party.
He said an extraordinary convention was the only way the party would cleanse itself.
MMD party leaders recently contended that Dr Mumba had failed to lead the MMD.
MMD vice-presidents Michael Kaingu and Dr Brian Chituwo, party spokesperson Dora Siliya, Lucky Mulusa, Kapembwa Simbao among others recently called for an extraordinary convention to elect new leaders.
Dr Kalumba explained that those condemning party members for expressing themselves over what they feel about the party leadership did not understand the MMD constitution.
