Over 60 houses collapse in Kawambwa District due to heavy down pour.

 

Mansa, April 10, ZANIS—Over 60 houses in Kawambwa District in Luapula Province have collapsed due heavy rains in the area.

Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo told ZANIS in Mansa says the incident happened on Tuesday night after a heavy down pour that lasted for over 10 hours.

 

Mr Kasolo named the affected villages as Katungulu and Musungweshi in Chief Mukanta ‘s area and part of Kawambwa Tea Estates compound.

 

Mr Kasolo further disclosed that no lives were lost but the situation is life threatening adding that minor injuries have been reported.

 

He said the provincial administration in Luapula Province has since instructed Kawambwa District Commissioner Ivo Mpasa to constitute a team that will assess the damage in the area.

 

The Permanent Secretary said government through the Office of the Provincial Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit DMMU has moved in and provided 30 tents to some of the affected families.

 

He added that some families have been taken to Katungulu Primary School while others have been housed at the Food Reserve Agency storgage shed at Katungulu.

 

Mr Kasolo said crops have been washed away and observed that there will be no room for the crops to recover since the rainy season is coming to an end.

 

The Permanent Secretary has since appealed to the cooperate world to help government and come to the aid of the people and improve sanitation in the area before an outbreak of a disease.
