A watchman at TAZARA Market in Kapiri Mposhi district has been murdered by bandits while on duty.

The watchman, identified as Isaac Chinoya, 62, was murdered around 02:00 hours on Sunday by the thieves who broke into some shops at the market and got away with groceries worth thousands of Kwacha.

Central Province Police Commissioner, Standwel Lungu, confirmed the incident to ZANIS in a telephone interview April 1st.

Mr Lungu said a knife is believed to have been used in the attack as the deceased was found with a deep stub wound on the left side of the head.

He said the victim also sustained bruises on his back, adding that a crowbar is suspected to have been used to break entry into the shop where the assailants managed to steal assorted groceries.

Mr Lungu said police were still investigating the matter and have since launched a man hunt for the suspects.

And a 37-year-old man has died on the spot after the Volvo light truck he was driving collided   with an on-coming Scania truck along the Great North road.

Mr Lungu identified the deceased as Obert Moyo, who died on the spot after his Volvo truck, registration number ABZ 1870, collided with the Scania registration number ABX 8216 driven by Pride Pumulo at Mpula area.

He said the accident happened around 06:30 hours on Sunday after the deceased failed to keep to his lane and subsequently collided with the on-coming Scania truck.

 

Mr Lungu said the deceased sustained head injuries and died on the spot while three passengers from the two vehicles were admitted to Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital for treatment.
