Communities in rural Zambia will benefit after five budding entrepreneurs raised more than £7,000 for Water Aid.

The third year undergraduate students at Anglia Ruskin University organised a prestigious black tie dinner and charity auction at Downing College on Saturday, as the final project of their Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Management degree.

The group chose to support Water Aid’s work in the Monze district of southern Zambia after discussions with the charity highlighted the importance of the life-saving work.

Karina Karaulova, head of business and relations for the Bid for Water project, said: “We chose a charity we all felt passionate about. Water is a basic human need, it’s scary because we wake up in the morning and have a drink or a shower but many communities in Zambia do not have that basic amenity and around half the population have nowhere to go to the toilet.”

Twenty one exciting experiences and items were up for grabs at the auction including a driving experience at Silverstone, a flight experience at Cambridge Aero Club and a pair of signed Frankie Dettori breeches.

One lucky raffle winner also became the proud owner of an 18 carat white gold trilogy diamond ring worth £1,950.

Miss Karaulova added: “It’s gone so well, people are really willing to help Water Aid and have definitely been keen to win the diamond ring.

“At times it’s been stressful but we have learnt so much from it. It’s been an amazing experience and tonight couldn’t have gone better.”

The other Lord Ashcroft International Business School students on the team included Carwyn Willis, Jonny Davies, Ben Geering and Jenny Fox.

MP for Cambridge, Julian Huppert, said: “It was an amazing event, the students clearly worked incredibly hard. It’s great news for people out in Zambia and for the students who have demonstrated their skills.

“Children are dying in the rural communities of Zambia and in other parts of the world because of the lack of clean water and sanitation. For many it’s a daily struggle to source water for their families and carrying the heavy containers leads to back and neck injuries.

“This event is hugely worthwhile in helping to provide the money to give some of those children a chance.”

The team were given a standing ovation for their efforts.
