ELEVEN people among them seven women have been arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) for trafficking in cannabis in Nchelenge district.
The suspects are all from senior Chief Puta of the Bwile people .
DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo said the eleven were arrested on Wednesday during an operation in the area .
Ms Katongo has confirmed the arrests to ZANIS in Nchelenge in a telephone interview and revealed that 23. 5 kilo grams of cannabis were recovered.
Ms. Katongo identified the three women as Maggie Mwape, 28, Mpundu Mwale , 20, and Edina Chishimba all of Chashele village.
She said others were Kennedy Kabaso, 34, and Chishimba Chansa aged 56 both of Kapembwa village and the duo of Kalwa Kena and Florence Lukwesa aged 26 and 20 respectively of Nshinka village.
Ms Katongo said others are Violet Mpundu aged 21 and 26 year old Doris Chansa of Kasholima Village who are jointly charged for possession of 79. 2 grams of cannabis.
She said the rest are 25 year old Kelvin Chomba of Mwaba village charged for possession of 13. 7 kilo grams of fresh cannabis which he had intercropped with maize and James Lumpa 22, of Sensele village for possession of 802.1 grams.
Ms. Katongo said the culprits will appear in the Nchelenge magistrate court soon and has cautioned the people of Chienge District especially women to refrain from engaging in drug trafficking and drug abuse.
“As a commission we want to caution women to desist from drug trafficking and other related vices because normally women are the ones who look after the family and when they are arrested the family suffers,” she said.
She explained that Mwape was found with 87 balls and loose compressed cannabis in a blue plastic bag weighing 725.4 grams while Mwale was found with one ball weighing 1. 2 grams.
She added that Kena and Lukwesa are jointly charged for possession of nine balls weighing 10. 8 grams.
She further explained that Kabaso is charged for possession of 789 grams of loose dagga while Chishimba and Chansa are charged for possession of 1. 023 and 7. 097 kilo grams of cannabis.
