AFRICAN women bantamweight title holder, Catherine Phiri’s feel of being World Boxing Council (WBC) Champion has received its first tickle with the global sanctioning body delivering the belt she will fight for against German, Pia Mazelanik this weekend.
Phiri will box the lanky German for the WBC Silver World title at Government Complex in Lusaka this Saturday on the same day exciting Zimbabwean Charles Manyuchi will be fighting Ghanaian Patrick Allotey for the WBC inter-continental welterweight title.
Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) operations director, Christopher Malunga said yesterday that the WBC had sent the belts to Zambia and were in the custody of Africa Boxing Union (ABU) boss, Nelson Sapi.
OQBP is the stable organising the two title fights where the two locally based boxers belong.
“We are happy to announce here that the WBC have delivered the belt that Catherine Phiri will be fighting for against Pia Mazelanik and right now it is with Mr Nelson Sapi, who is the WBC official. We are happy and it shows you how big an organisation we are dealing with here and how important it will be for us to win this title.
“The WBC have also added one more fixture to the programme ahead of the fight. Thursday, March 13 will be the day for mock-weigh-in so any boxer who could miss weight by maybe a kilogramme or just grammes will have 24 hours to shed off that weight. Then Friday will be time for official weigh-in. So all boxers coming from outside should be in by Thursday for the mock weigh-in,” Malunga said.
He also expressed happiness that the local boxers were within weight range and would maintain discipline to meet the weight requirements ahead of the fights.
Malunga also revealed that Exodus Boxing Promotions’ highly-talented boxer, Pethias Chisenga had been added to the March 15 bill to fight Gibon Kamota for the national featherweight title.
The inclusion of Chisenga brings to six the number of titles to be fought on the night.
And Malunga said Allotey would be first of the foreign boxers to arrive in Zambia on Tuesday together with his team and then followed by Mazelanik on Wednesday before WBC president, Houichine Houchoi jets in on Thursday, hours before the mock weigh-in.
