ONE person has died of typhoid in Chibolya township in Mufulira while three others are hospitalised.
Mufulira district commissioner Chanda Kabwe and district medical officer George Mukupa confirmed in separate interviews yesterday that typhoid has broken out in Chibolya.
“The sad news is that typhoid has broken out again in our district. So far, one person has died of the disease while three people are admitted to Chibolya clinic,” Mr Kabwe said
He identified the deceased as Levy Simbule, 30, of Francis Mukuka area in Chibolya township.
He said all the people that have suffered from typhoid are from Francis Mukuka in Chibolya because the area is prone to the waterborne disease due to unsanitary conditions, especially in the rainy season.
Mr Kabwe advised residents to maintain high levels of hygiene and to use pit latrines to prevent the spread of typhoid.
He also advised residents to remain calm because Government has deployed a specialised team of health personnel to control the outbreak.
Mr Kabwe also assured residents that the District Health Management Team has acquired sufficient drugs to treat typhoid cases.
He said health authorities are only admitting serious cases to the hospital while the rest are being treated as outpatients
And Dr Mukupa appealed to residents to rush to nearest health centres when they feel unwell.
“My appeal is for the residents to quickly go to the nearest health centre each time they fall ill. We have enough stocks of drugs and qualified medical personnel will be on hand to assist them,” Dr Mukupa said.
