Govt. directs repossession of mine slag dump at Nkana
Mkushi, February 26th, 2014, ZANIS—Government has directed for the repossession of the mine slag dump located in Wusakile township from Chambishi Metals due to negligence of the facility.
Mines deputy Minister Richard Musukwa has since told Chambishi Metals to surrender the slag dump to government which will in turn be given to the people that had been illegally scavenging for copper stones on the dump.
Mr Musukwa said this in an interview in Kitwe District, today.
He said government will engage experts at the Ministry of Mines to regularize the illegal mining activities and put up a proper mine plan to create a safe mining environment.
He observed that the slug dump has become a death trap for youths as the mining company has failed to oversee the entire asset and provide adequate safety monitoring mechanism.
He further noted that the slug dump has become a serious safety and security risk for the people of Wusakile Township because it could collapse any time.
He said Government was determined to prevent a national catastrophe because there were hundreds of young people scavenging for copper stones on the facility.
Musukwa said the mountain was a preserve of Chambishi Metals but it had been neglected and failed to comply with the environment al degradation aspect .
And when contacted, Chambishi Metals chief executive officer, who was only identified as Dr Singh refused to comment over the matter.
Dr Singh said he had no idea over the matter and referred all queries to the ministry of Mines.
