Zesco starts operating in Pemba District

Pemba 20th February, ZANIS –   The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (Zesco)  has  established its presence in the new district of Pemba.

This is the Power company’s response to calls by the residents for  its physical presence  in  area to address the electricity needs of the growing population.

Zesco Area Manager Clement Kuyela  said that his company has since done a lease agreement with the local council in Pemba.

ZANIS reports that  Mr. Kuyela  said this during the District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) meeting yesterday  for all government heads of departments, nongovernmental organizations and parastatals at Pemba Catholic Parish Hall.

Mr. Kuyela explained that the power outages and erratic power supply experienced in the new district were  due to the fact that  five towns namely Mazabuka, Pemba, Monze ,Chipepo, Gwembe and Lonchniver depended on one single line of which if there was a fault in one area, all the towns would be affected.

He said to that effect, Zesco had  negotiated with Nakambala Sugar to put an interlink for Sinazongwe through chipepo to feed customers on the other side .

He disclosed that plans were underway to put a 175kva line to run from siavonga to chipepo through the bottom line to sub-station at Rusangu junction in monze to releave Chisekesi line.

Mr. Kuyela however bemoaned   the rampart massive encroachment of Zesco land by the  general public.

He noted that people were building infrastructure under zesco wayline affecting progress of zesco operations.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kuyela has raised deep concern over the zesco power lines that pass through the  nakambala sugar plantations saying when sugar canes are burnt, poles get affected adding that the worst happens in wet lands as poles collapse.

He appealed o the members to report any incidences of illegal connections and faults through the Zesco customer care line.
