Govt to upgrade 22 schools in Luapula
Chipili, February 15, 2014, ZANIS……….. Government will upgrade 22 primary schools in Luapula Province to secondary level.
This is out of the 220 primary schools earmarked for upgrading the whole country.
Deputy Minister for Education David Mabumba confirmed the development to ZANIS in Chipili after a meeting he held with the teachers and pupils at Chipili secondary school recently.
Mr. Mabumba said Mulwani and Chululuongo primary schools in Chipili district will be upgraded to day secondary schools.
He said the government was focusing on building more secondary schools that are estimated to cost billions of kwacha.
He said Government was facing a huge challenge of upgrading primary schools into day secondary schools noting that this could only be resolved with the co-operation of teachers and pupils in the affected schools.
He said eight universities, three Mathematics colleges and seven trades college will be constructed in the next two years as part of government policy to increase access to tertiary education.
He also explained the introduction of the new curriculum for grades one to four pupils who will be instructed in local languages.
And Chipili district commissioner Raphael Kauseni said the administration does not seem to have a challenge with the introduction of the new curriculum.
He said the introduction has made schools in Chipili district user friendly unlike in the past when the practice was regarded as a punishable offence.
Mr. Kauseni said people should know that this medium of instruction was only for the first four (4) grades then afterwards English language would automatically be used.
