Over 500 maize fields have been submerged in water due to flash floods that hit the Barotse flood plains in the newly created Nalolo district in Western province.
Western Province Minister Josephine Limata said a team of agriculture officers will be sent to the district to ascertain the impact of the floods.
Ms Limata said this when she addressed indunas from Litunga lamboela Palace who met at the office of the District Administrative Officer yesterday.
She disclosed government through the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has sent 450 x 50kg bags of relief maize to avert the looming hunger in the area.
Ms limata said government was committed to alleviate hunger and poverty and does not want to see people starving in the province.
She said an additional 100 metric tonnes of relief maize will soon be delivered by DMMU in the district so that hunger is completely wiped out in all the affected areas.
And Prince Mando Akabiwa of Litunga lamboela named the most affected areas among others as Kambai and Moyo wards in Nasiwayo area in Chief Nalopu’s area which has an estimated population of over 6000 people.
