Government says it is concerned with the pyramidal kind of education in the education sector.

Deputy Minister in the ministry of Health Dr Chitalu Chilufya who is also Mansa Central Member of Parliament says government is making every effort to ensure that it breaks the pyramidal education system and ensure that the number of pupils that is enrolled at first entry is maintained until tertiary level of education.

Dr Chilufya says to achieve this, government will this year upgrade 220 schools countrywide into secondary schools.

Dr Chilufya disclosed this at Mwang’uni Primary School in Mansa when he addressed the staff at the school yesterday.

He told the school Headmistress at the school that in Mansa district Mwang’uni primary school is one of the schools that will be upgraded to secondary school and should therefore begin the process of transformation now.

He said government will ensure that resources for the upgrading of the schools are put in place to ensure that there is adequate infrastructure.

He added that the upgrading of the schools will ensure that the long distances that pupils walk to go to secondary schools is reduced thereby encouraging more children especially girls to go to school.

Dr Chilufya also said that one of the top priority of government and his constituency is education saying infrastructure development is key in the education sector and he will use all means possible to ensure that the infrastructure in schools in his constituency is improved.

He said as a member of parliament for Mansa Central and from Luapula province he is concerned with the low number of pupils that passed to grade 10 in his constituency and the province as whole, saying there is need to do an analysis and ensure that the issue of failure is addressed in Mansa Central constituency and the province as whole.

At the same gathering, Dr Chilufya launched the tree planting exercise for the Mwang’uni community in his constituency under the ongoing countrywide tree planting exercise.

And speaking during the tree planting exercise, Dr Chilufya commended the Lions Club of Mansa for partnering with the government and the community for carrying out the tree planting exercise in the area.
