–A 23-year-old man of Chilubi district in Northern Province has been convicted and sentenced to 24 months imprisonment with hard labour after he was found guilty on Charges of theft contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Appearing before Sanfya-based magistrate, Timothy Daka, was Boniface Chilao of Matipa village of Chief Chiwanagala’s area.
Chilao was charged with one count of stealing receipt books, a date stamp and some clothes all being properties of Chilubi district council valued at K395 contrary to Section 272 CAP 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Facts before the court were that on December 2, 2013, the accused was arrested by police after he was reported to have stolen the said items in Chilubi district.
Chilao had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
And when passing judgment, Magistrate Daka said following the evidence adduced before the court by the state witnesses the court was very convinced that the accused did commit the said offense.
In mitigation the Chilao said he was very sorry with what he did and that he was therefore asking the court to exercise maximum lenience on him.
The magistrate said he had taken into consideration what the convict had said in mitigation but that the offence committed was so serious hence the need to punish the perpetrators so as to deter other would be offenders.
