Police insiders told the Sports Mail in Lusaka yesterday that the Zambia Police command is not happy with the team’s performance last season and decided to come up with an inquiry to find the cause of poor results.
A source said a number of Nkwazi executive committee members have been interviewed and statements have been taken from them.
She said the Police top brass feels Nkwazi has players who are good enough to compete in the Super Division.
“No-one is really sure about what led to the team’s demotion because the guys received all the support they needed. I think it’s what has forced them [Zambia Police command] to set up an inquiry,” she said.
The source said the command feels it will be a waste of resources to continue supporting ‘High Flying’ Nkwazi if the problem is not resolved before the 2014 season gets under way in March.
Nkwazi finished 13th with 34 points and were demoted alongside Lime Hotspur, Kalulushi Modern Stars and Forest Rangers.
The executive dismissed coach Oswald Mutapa seven games into the 2013 season and replaced him with Dave Musole, who could not save the team from sinking.
But Zambia Police national sports coordinator Wakung’uma Shapa declined to comment.
“Currently, I am busy preparing speeches for tonight’s [last night’s] annual police sports awards,” Shapa said.
He, however, promised to issue a comprehensive statement today.
