–Kafue District Commissioner, Grace Ngulube, has commissioned the distribution of relief maize in Mufulusa village in Chiawa to respond to the plight of the vulnerable and aged people affected by hunger in the area.

Speaking during the commissioning, Ms Ngulube also revealed that the district disaster management team allocated 1500 x 25 kg bags and 500 x 25 kg bags of relief maize to Chiawa and chanyanya respectively.

She disclosed that the people of Chiawa are feeding on wild fruits and lost two lives due to the poisonous fruits they consumed, hence the quick response from government to avoid loss of more lives in the area.

Ms Ngulube added that 20 per cent of the 2000 bags allocated to the district will be for work, where the community will identify a project they could work on and will in turn be given some maize while 80 per cent will be given to the vulnerable and old people for free.

The District Commissioner has since thanked the Republican President, Michael Sata, for choosing Kafue as one of the beneficiary districts.

And headman Mufulusa commended government for the quick intervention by attending to the plight of the people, especially the vulnerable and old aged in the area.

He said the maize distribution will reduce vices such as early marriages in the area as most parents marry off their daughters for money to help them buy food.

Headman Mufulusa has since called on government to increase the allocation to enable more people in the area to access the staple food.
