SUSPECTED criminals broke into Standard Chartered Bank and snatched an undisclosed amount of money from the Automated Teller Machine (ATM) strong room in Kitwe at the weekend.
The suspected criminals allegedly attacked and overpowered three ATM custodians who were loading money into the ATM machine at the Town Centre Branch on Oxford Road.
Acting Copperbelt police commissioner Joyce Kasosa confirmed the incident which happened between 16:30 hours and 17:00 hours on Sunday.
Ms Kasosa said three ATM custodians and a security guard had since been picked up to help police with investigations.
Ms Kasosa named those picked up as Benny Sakandandu, 44, a security guard of Wusakile Township, Freddie Kaonga, 35, of Ndeke Township, Kawina Muneka, 29, of Nkana East and 30-year-old Matilda Zulu of Mukuba Natwange area.
“I can confirm that there was a robbery at Standard Chartered Bank in Kitwe on Sunday where suspected criminals who were all wearing hats at the time of the suspected robbery snatched an undisclosed amount of money.
“We do not know whether these people had weapons or not as we are still investigating the case,” she said.
Ms Kasosa further said police were yet to establish whether the ATM custodians were bank employees.
