—-Western Water and Sewerage Company (WWSC) Acting Managing Director, Chiinda Nyembaula says the utility company aspires to attain high levels of water supply this year through Mongu additional work project.
Speaking to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) Mongu in an interview today, Mr Nyembaula said the project which calls for rehabilitation of old tanks and putting of new boreholes in selected areas was funded by Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).
He noted that the projects that were funded by DANIDA are still running despite DANIDA having stopped funding projects under WWSC.
The Mongu additional work project is one of the measures that have been put in place this year to enhance adequate water supply in the township.
Mr Nyembaula said the utility company has also embarked on rehabilitating water pipes whose connections were damaged in Imwiko area during the road construction of urban roads adding that water supply is expected to normalize in the area once they are re-instated.
He added that the utility company is also rehabilitating two water tanks in Imwiko area of which one has been completed in order to ensure adequate water supply in the area and the company drilled a borehole at Katongo area to have adequate water supply sometime this year.
“The Mandanga Supply Scheme project which was commissioned in May, 2012 will supply water to Mandanga and Chisonga area respectively. And residents in that area are expected to receive water at least 12 hours of the day,” said Mr Nyembaula.
Mr Nyembaula also explained that inadequate water supply in the township is sometimes due to the acute instability of electricity supply and the lack of voltage that makes it hard to supply water.
He further pointed out that vandalism by community members is another drawback for the utility company as it causes the quality of service to go down.
Mr Nyembaula has since appealed to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing and other donors or well-wishers to assist the utility company in improving the water supply and quality service delivery in the district.
Mr Nyembaula however stated that despite the challenges faced by the company the level of water supply in the district is quite satisfactory.
