Govt. to construct roads in new Lungas District
Mansa, Wednesday, January 08, 2014 – ZANIS — Government says that the newly created Lunga District is bound to become the rice basket for Zambia once the transport network like roads are constructed.
Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo says that the new district has potential for massive rice production enough to feed the whole country.
“ Once roads are constructed here, Lunga District has potential of feeding the whole Zambia, “ he said.
The PS said this when Local Government and Housing Permanent Secretary Howard Sikwela paid a courtesy call on him at his office, today.
Lunga District on the banks of Lake Banweulu is in a swampy area with a massive potential for rice production .
Government plans to construct a 65 kilometer road on the main island and a 600 meter bridge from Mpanta to the main island.
The minister revealed that government was for the idea to open up the new District and would go ahead with the project to open up the area to the bigger commercial opportunities to the mainland.
He said government build the bridge and construct the road to open up the island to commercial rice growing because the land was fertile and favorable for rice growing.
And Local Government PS Howard Sikwela said his ministry was focused on ensuring that the new districts carry out the initial projects in physical infrastructure development.
He said Lunga was a district which needs special attention because of its uniqueness.
