Eastern province has adequate ARVs- Mulenga
Chipata, Jan 7, 2014, ZANIS…..Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Chileshe Mulenga says Eastern Province has adequate supply of AntiRetroviral drugs which had run short late last month.
Dr Mulenga noted that though the province ran short of the drugs late last year, it was supplied to all people under treatment.
ZANIS reports that the Permanent Secretary said this in an interview in response to concerns over poor supply AntiRetroviral drugs at various health institutions in the province.
Dr Mulenga said that the province did not completely run out though he stated that supply was relatively low.
He stated that the last consignment of the drugs was received on Monday and that all health institutions have adequate drugs for patients taking ARVs.
He has since advised all patients to go to their health facilities to get enough drugs to last for a period of three months.
And Dr Mulenga has advised patients to report to his office if they encounter any problems in accessing treatment at any health institution in the province.
He stated that the supply is now adequate and that he will not tolerate a poor attitude among health personnel who will be adamant to supply the drug to patients.
He warned of stern action against health staff charged with the responsibility of supplying the drugs to people on treatment if they do not serve patients as required.
Recently, there have been complaints over poor supply of ARVs to health institutions.
Earlier, some people on treatment complained that they were being given two week supply of the drug as opposed to the recommended three months.
The affected people who chose to be anonymous feared that supply would completely run out saying they would die because there are no other means of accessing the drugs.
