SOME police officers in Chipata have expressed unhappiness over the disconnection of water supply to two police camps in the district by Eastern Water and Sewerage Company.
The officers from Chipata Central Police Camp and New Police Camp said they were disappointed with the decision by the water utility to cut supply to their homes.
“It is really disappointing that our houses are being disconnected by the water company. Maybe as a reporter, you should assist us in finding out what the situation is at the moment.
“We are suspecting foul play because previously, the police command used to pay the bills for us,” the officers said.
Eastern Province Police chief Grace Chipalila referred all queries to Eastern Water and Sewerage Company.
“I think I have no comment at the moment. Please ask the water company because I am treating this as an internal matter,” Ms Chipalila said.
Eastern Water and Sewerage Company managing director Wamuwi Changani said the utility was merely following the change of Government policy in which police officers were expected to settle water bills on their own.
Mr Changani said the Government had changed the policy in which police officers were previously on a composite account through which water bills were paid for them.
He said individual police households who failed to pay the bills would have water supply disconnected.
“We are merely following the change in the Government policy which is now compelling each police officer to settle water bills to the company. This I am sure was done in October this year,” Mr Changani said.
He urged Eastern Water and Sewerage Company staff to continue working hard so that the company maintains the delivery of quality services to consumers.
Mr Changani said the water utility had embarked on rehabilitating sewer pipes for customers in Kapata and Chimwemwe townships in Chipata District.
