Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini has urged Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries to embrace regional efforts of strengthening governance and optimum use of natural Resources.
Dr. Matibini noted that natural resources belong to SADC citizens who expect to benefit from the exploitation of the natural resources in order to improve their livelihood.
He said this at the launch of the Barometer for Natural Resource Governance and Monitoring in Lusaka yesterday.
Dr. Matibini said the instrument can be used to monitor how governments and extraction industries manage natural resources, especially minerals.
The speaker urged the SADC Parliamentary Forum to ensure that the barometer is quickly implemented as it was in the interest of all SADC citizens.
He has since urged SADC member states to cooperate with the implementation of the barometer.
SADC initiated the development of the barometer to strengthen capacity of Parliaments and Parliamentarians in SADC to enable them play legislative, policing and monitoring roles in ensuring that mineral resources benefit the countries and citizens.
