Government has embarked on the construction of a boarding school in vubwi district in Eastern province at a total cost of K43, 000.00.

Vubwi District Commissioner (DC), Mumba Nkoloma, confirmed the development to ZANIS in vubwi district.

Mr Nkoloma said Mbande Secondary School is a complete package which would consist of 8 dormitories for girls and boys, administration block, sick bay, computer laboratory, classroom blocks and kitchen among others

He stated that construction works started in 2011, adding that the project would take two years to complete.

The DC noted that over 29 teachers’ houses will also be constructed, saying all the structures are at slab level.

He, however, said currently the area lacked a school infrastructure forcing the Ministry of Education to use a tobacco shed as classrooms to allow more pupils to attend lessons.

Mr Nkoloma said that most of the pupils who come from far areas rent small huts in the nearby villages, posing a danger to the teenage girls who are likely to be abused.

“Once completed the school will accommodate all the pupils who come from outlying areas thereby encourage more girls to go back to school,” he said.

He also explained that lack of school infrastructure has also contributed to school drop-outs especially among girl-children who similarly come from far places

Mr Nkoloma revealed that China Gansu limited has also employed over 116 local people to carry out works for both projects, adding that the move will alleviate poverty among the people in the area.

He has since commented the construction company for the quality works exhibited so far.
