NKANA lady golfer, Carol Chilikwela at the weekend defied all odds to win the traditional 2013 season-closing Levy Patrick Mwanawasa Trophy at Kabwe Golf Club.
With a record 137 golfers battling for honours in Zambia Golf Union’s (ZGU) last competition of the season, Chilikwela fired an unstoppable 42 points after 18 gruelling holes to pick up the top accolade.
Chilikwela’s impressive showing also saw her chopping her handicap from 36 to 32 while in the A Division, R Kabanda of Mpika reigned supreme on 40 points, winning the first prize on a count back over Denmark Mulambo.
Kabwe favourite, Kelly Munkombwe was third on 39 points, getting the slot ahead of JB Chishimba on a count back following a tie.
The B Division winner was D Kamanga on 40 points who edged AS Musenge on count back after a tie while Turnbull Mubanga wrapped up the C Division championship after carding 37 points.
For the ladies’ section, Anne Pangani’s 40 points was enough to clinch the top prize with Lonah Mwenda collecting the longest drive award.
Newly-elected Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) president, Joe Malanji was also rewarded for the historic achievement for Zambia.
Malanji, the immediate-past ZGU president, is the first Zambian to hold such a lofty position in African golf’s governing authority and in appreciation to Kabwe Golf Club’s efforts to rehabilitate the course, the AGC chief donated K3,000 for the maintenance of Central Province’s elite golf course.
ZGU president, Charles Mwanza thanked the golfers for turning up in numbers for the union’s last activity on the course.
Mwanza, however, reiterated ZGU’s resolve to hold fundraising ventures for its own cause, saying the union should not only help other organisations in raising revenue but also think about its own programmes.
Kabwe captain, Kennedy Chishala thanked ZGU for holding the season-ending golf activity at the club annually.
