NKANA Golf Club will tomorrow host the MTN invitational tournament whose proceeds will be channelled towards the refurbishment of the club which is preparing to host the 2014 Zambia Open tournament.
MTN Zambia chief marketing officer, Clement Asante said yesterday the tournament had become a regular fixture on the company’s calendar.
Asante said in a statement released yesterday that MTN Zambia expected to raise K300, 000 for the invitational tournament that was expected to attract 136 golfers drawn from its corporate clients and the golf fraternity.
“Since inception, we have used the invitational to raise money for sponsorship of activities including charity events. This year, our focus is on supporting Nkana Golf Club so that it can successfully host next year’s Zambia Open,” said Asante.
And Asante said the format of the annual golf invitational for this year had been merged into one to be held in Kitwe from traditional two competitions that used to be shared between the Copperbelt and Lusaka.
“We also use the invitational tournament to interact with our clients and we are confident that we will meet the target under this format,” he said.
Last year, MTN Zambia raised K156, 000 which was used to refurbish Nkana Golf Club with Asante saying that Zambia had the potential to be a golf tourism destination owing to its favourable climate and well-manicured golf course.
“It is not by accident that the Zambia Open attracts world-class golf professionals from across the globe. Zambia’s golf courses in Chingola, Ndola, Lusaka and Chilanga are outstanding and well-manicured. The climate also puts Zambia in a better position to host world golf events”, Asante said.
He called for investment in the sport if Zambia is to become the hub of golf tourism in the region.
