THE Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) has named a 20-member provisional squad to go into camp today ahead of the 18th edition of the Safaricom Sevens tournament slated for September 20-22 in Kenya.
According to a statement made available by the ZRU secretariat yesterday, the squad is set to start preparations for the annual event set for the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani, Nairobi starting on Friday this week.
The team that would be under the tutelage of Musonda Kaminsa has seen league leaders, Diggers contributing six players in Benaya Mukwamba, Robert Chilundama, Hopeman Kanema, Kelvin Kampandu, Ackim Mushota, Ephraim Musukwa and Fine Chikamba.
Other players are Israel Kalumba, Kapindu Nyangu, MacGiven Muchindu, Shelleni Michelo and Jacob Musukwa, all from Lusaka.
Red Arrows has contributed Terry Kaushiku, Nigel Chibwe and Kelvin Kampandu, while Fernard Kashimoto is the only Buffaloes player in the squad.
Joshua Gabriel, Martin Chisanga (Konkola), Thaddious Chipoya (Eagles) and MacDonald Mashawu are also part of the provisional team named.
The Zambian contingent will battle with other international sides for the Robin Cahill trophy in what is arguably Africa’s premier sevens rugby event.
ZRU competitions chairperson, Muleya Moono said in an interview yesterday that the team would be in camp until their departure on Thursday.
