CHIPOLOPOLO striker Jacob Mulenga says he is injured and that there is nothing mischievous about his absence from tomorrow’s must-win FIFA 2014 World Cup clash against Ghana in Kumasi.
Mulenga will miss the crucial Group D qualifier after sustaining a thigh injury in training at his Dutch club FC Utrecht late last week.
“Last week Thursday I suffered a little setback. It’s not a big thing but needed time to recover,” Mulenga said in an interview from his base in Holland.
“This hurts me more than it hurts the Zambian people not to be able to go to Ghana and play.
“But I cannot do anything about it, I am not God.”
Mulenga was also left out of Utrecht’s trip to early leaders PEC Zwolle that ended 1-all.
Zambia team doctor Joseph Kabungo on Tuesday confirmed receiving a medical report from Utrecht with regards to Mulenga’s injury status but insisted that the striker was mandated to travel for the bench to verify the injury.
The 29-year-old striker is Chipolopolo’s top scorer in the qualifiers with three goals after scoring a brace in a 4-nil home win over Lesotho on June 8 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
A week later, Mulenga scored his third goal at the same venue in a 1-1draw against Sudan.
