ACC arrests a ministry of Works and Supply officer

THE Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested a ministry of Works and Supply officer in Chipata for alleged corrupt practices involving more than K46, 000.
Nyongani Mwenda, 38, a district works supervisor at the Buildings Department has been charged with three counts of abuse of authority of office.
Mr Mwenda of Little Bombay Township is in the first count alleged to have abused the authority of his office in the manner he solicited and obtained contingency funds amounting to K15, 000.
This is alleged to have occurred between March 1 and August 31, last year.
The money was from Annie Kanyemba, a director of Merchant General Dealers, a private company contracted by the Buildings Department in Chipata.
This is contained in statement released by ACC public relations manager Timothy Moono in Lusaka yesterday.
Mr Mwenda is in the second count accused of abusing authority of his office in the manner he obtained contingency funds amounting to K13, 000.
The money was from Caprikem Enterprises, a private company contracted through the Buildings Department to rehabilitate the virology laboratory at the Veterinary Department.
He is in the third count alleged to have during the same period obtained contingency funds amounting to K18, 070 from Merchant General Dealers.
Mr Mwenda, who has since been released on bond, would appear in court tomorrow for possible plea.
