SOUTHAMPTON striker Emmanuel Mayuka has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for English FA Cup champions, Wigan Athletic.
Wigan, the Championship side, is hoping to convince the Premiership team to sanction a season-long loan deal for Mayuka.
According to British media, Wigan coach, Owen Coyle is believed to be attracted to Mayuka’s pace and wants to add him to his other attackers, Grant Holt and Marc-Antoine Fortune, who he has signed during the transfer window.
Both the Mail online and the Sportsmole.co.uk reported yesterday that the Latics may not be able to fund a permanent move for the 22-year-old but are hopeful that they can convince the Saints to sanction a season-long loan deal.
Reports say that Coyle is keen to recruit the Zambia international before next weekend’s Community Shield clash against English Premier League champions, Manchester United.
Mayuka scored his first goal for Southampton in the 3-1 win over Turkish side Besiktas during a pre-season friendly match played at Stadion Lind in a game that the Chipolopolo star impressed. He also played in the 0-0 draw against Celta Vigo on Saturday.
The former Kabwe Warriors player signed a five-year deal worth around £3 million with Southampton to keep him until the summer of 2017.
Mayuka, however, did not have much play time during the 2012-2013 English Premiership season as he most of the time came off the bench.
But Mayuka’s recent performance during Southampton’s pre-season tour has been impressive with Wigan wanting his signature.
