TRANSPORT, Works, Supply and Communications Minister Yamfwa Mukanga has given a 10-day ultimatum to contractors at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport in Livingstone to complete the construction of the new terminal building.
Mr Mukanga issued the ultimatum to contractors on Thursday following failure to complete the new building by August 1, 2013 as agreed earlier.
The minister said during inspection of the airport that he was disappointed with the outstanding works.
“I don’t want to be coming here and waste my time just to see uncompleted structures. I am giving you 10 days to complete the structure.
“You must finish the remaining works by August 10, 2013. I will come back to inspect on August 12 and 13 and I should find the entire structure completed,” he said.
The current airport building has the capacity to attract 250,000 passengers per year while the new terminal building would be attracting about 700,000 passengers annually.
Mr Mukanga said he had not seen much progress on the works since the last time he inspected the project.
“Let’s meet the target and finish so that we are not an embarrassment. Whatever you do, consider the people living with disabilities,” he said.
He was, however, impressed to note that glasses had been fixed on the building but called for enhancement of quality to all the works.
“As far as quality is concerned, don’t compromise. I want to come and see test results not verbal results so that this roof does not fly off. I don’t want to be part of failures because I am not a failure,” he said.
On roads, Mr Mukanga said he was disappointed with the Road Development Agency (RDA) because most roads being upgraded by Inyatsi Roads Zambia were not yet completed.
“Most roads need another level on top. We need to do road markings, drains and RDA should not allow the contractor to leave the site before works are completed.
“I want to see that roads are done to acceptable standards. I appeal to Livingstone residents to give us time to finish the roads. I am always told that the roads are finished but after I checked, I find that the roads are not complete,” he said.
Mr Mukanga urged RDA to be truthful with its communication so that the people know the truth.
He was, however, happy that the upgrading of Mosi-oa-Tunya and Kapufi roads had been completed.
