Tanzanian national nabbed for possession of cocaine
Lusaka, July 13th, ZANIS–The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Lusaka have arrested a 43 year-old male of Tanzanian national for being in possession of cocaine.
Gwido Mbugi, a Tanzanian businessman of Matero Township in Lusaka has been arrested for being in possession of two 2 rocks of cocaine which was found in the pocket of his trousers.
ZANIS reports that DEC Public Relations Officer Samuel Silomba disclosed this in a statement in Lusaka, today.
Mr. Silomba said that Mbugi was apprehended at a named bar in Kabwata area by the DEC officers.
He said the suspect has since been remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
And Mr Silomba has disclosed that the Commission has in the last six months arrested a total number of 2512 people countrywide for trafficking in various quantities of illicit drugs.
He said out of the total number of people arrested, 2449 are Zambian nationals while 63 are foreign nationals who include seven 7 females and 56 males.
Copperbelt Province, according to the statement , recorded the highest number of arrests with 762 people in the period under review followed by Lusaka Province with 491 people.
Mr. Silomba further disclosed that the remaining 1259 number of people arrested has been shared among the other eight provinces.
Meanwhile Mr. Silomba has disclosed that a total, 34.6 tonnes of cannabis, 837kilograms of Miraa, 304.78 grams of heroin and 88.03 grams of cocaine were seized in the period January to July this year.
Mr. Silomba said other drugs seized in the same period include diazepam, lorazepam, ephedrine, lidocaine and Phenobarbital.
