DMMU conducts orientation workshop for DC’s in Western Province
Mongu, July 11, ZANIS…The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) is conducting a two days orientation workshop for District Commissioners and Planners in Western province on the operations of the Disaster Management and mitigation Unit.
Officiating at the workshop yesterday Western Province Permanent Secretary Emmanuel Mwamba said he was confident that the workshop would enhance the operations and strengthen the coordination role of the Disaster Management and Mitigation unit as government endeavors to serve the vulnerable Communities in the country in a more effective and efficient manner.
Mr. Mwamba stated that the DMMU department has an overall objective of developing, coordinating and monitoring disaster management programmes in order to rationalize resource utilization and ensure effective implementation of programmes.
The PS added that Government approved and launched the disaster management policy together with the disaster management operations manual which is currently undergoing review in order to take on board issues of climate change and disaster risk reduction among others.
Mr. Mwamba further added that Zambia is an agriculture based economy hence there is need to address the issue of climate change with seriousness in order to prevent the wild scale of hunger in the country.
He however disclosed that the delay in response by the DMMU in cases of disasters is as a result of limited resources to reach all the districts, adding that there is need for DMMU to extend their offices to the districts for quick response.
He has since called on the DMMU to put in more preventive measures and sensitize communities on how to prevent disasters.
The workshop which has attracted all the District Commissioners in 16 district of western province is being held at the provincial Ministers Conference hall in Mongu district.
