Reading healthy for child growth- Expert
Lusaka, July 10th, ZANIS— Creative Associates International (CAI)
Chief of Party Tassew Zewdie says early grade reading skills among children is
crucial to the development of the country.
Dr. Zewdie said early grade reading is important to the future
scholastic development of millions of children in the country.
He said pupils face various problems in reading various subjects in
class if they are not adequately taught how to read at an early age.
ZANIS Reports that Dr. Zewdie said this in Lusaka today during the
National Launch of the “Reading tools in a Box” project a partnership
between the Zambian Government, Creative Associates International, and
the USAID/ZAMBIA read to succeed project.
Dr. Zewdie explained that the main objective of the project is to
improve learner performance, particularly early grade reading among
children in the country.
He added that the project will assist schools to help pupils to learn
to read as early as possible so that they don’t lose the main reason
why they go to school.
Dr. Zewdie reiterated that if strong foundational reading skills are
not acquired at an early age, the gaps in reading ability and
achievement grow larger over time.
He further said the project will not only act as an additional
resource to provide reading materials to children, but also a
proposition of a long-term and a sustained Public Private Partnership
(PPP) which will play a significant role in the provision of quality
education in Zambia.
