—–Nakonde Border Post has been described as one of the most used entry points for drug trafficking in the country.
Muchinga Province Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) Regional Commander, David Sikufele, says the Commission has arrested more than 25 people for drug trafficking who enter the country through the Nakonde Border Post.
Mr. Sikufele said this during the commemoration of the World Anti-Drugs Day held at Nakonde Council Rest House grounds under the theme: Make Health Your New High Life, Not Drugs” yesterday.
The Regional Commander further explained that this year alone the Commission has managed to seize psychotropic substances commonly known as miraa weighing 397.1 Kg, 304 grams of heroin, and 5.87 Kg of dagga.
Mr Sikufele pointed out that miraa was the most trafficked drug that comes into the country through the Nakonde Border Post from East Africa.
Meanwhile, Mr Sikufele has expressed worry at the high number of counterfeit notes being brought into the country through the same border post.
Mr Sikufele noted that of those arrested include one Zimbabwean, one South Sudanese, nine Tanzanians and the rest are Zambians.
He further observed that the number of people being arrested has increased this year as compared to last year.
Mr Sikufele said this was as a result of the DEC intensifying its efforts to conduct patrols and road blocks at regular intervals.
He added that the other contributing factor of such cases in the area is the porous nature of the Nakonde Border Post.
Mr Sikufele has since advised people in the area to desist from engaging themselves in such vices as they are serious offences that can land one into prison for a maximum of 25 years and are non baillable.
