NELSON MANDELA is now in critical condition, the President of South Africa has announced.

In a statement, Jacob Zuma said Mr Mandela’s doctors were “doing everything possible to get his condition to improve”.

South Africa’s first black president, who is 94, was taken to hospital earlier this month for the third time this year owing to a recurrent lung infection.

Zuma had visited Mandela in hospital in Pretoria earlier this evening (June 23) and was told the former president’s condition had deteriorated over the past 24 hours.

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable. He is in good hands,” said Zuma, referring to the revolutionary by his clan name.

Zuma appealed for prayers for Mandela and his medical team.

Mandela was taken into hospital earlier this month prompting concern from across the world. But after four days, doctors reported he was getting better and his condition was described as stable.

Mandela is revered for leading the fight to end apartheid, a system of white minority rule, a cause for which he was jailed for 27 years. He was released from prison in 1990.

It was during his imprisonment that Mandela first contracted tuberculosis which has contributed to his ill health.

In 1994, he was elected President of South Africa in the country’s first fully representative multi-racial election.
