Feira votes peacefully

VOTING in Luangwa’s Feira Constituency yesterday started on a high note in some areas, with most voters expressing happiness at the peaceful campaigns experienced.
Voters in some wards, especially those surrounded by the game park, started late as they waited for animals to return to the bush for fear of being attacked.
A check at Mwalilia Polling Station at 08:40 hours indicated that at least 69 people had already cast their votes while at Chilime and Muyuu wards, voters had gathered as early as 05:00 hours in readiness to cast their votes.
Chilime and Muyuu polling stations had recorded over 90 voters out of the total registered numbers of 294 and 249, respectively, with the voters expressing happiness and hope that the exercise would end peacefully.
At Mphuka Ward over 89 people had cast their votes while at Dzalo, both streams recorded 171 voters as at 09:50 hours.
Some voters spoken to said they were happy that the constituency had not recorded any serious violent activity during campaigns compared to other places where innocent lives were lost in by-elections.
District Commissioner Eunie Mumba appealed to all political parties to learn from the peace that had characterised the Feira by-election and urged them to exhibit similar political maturity in future elections.
Five candidates contested the election which resulted from the resignation of MMD’s Patrick Ngoma, who joined the Patriotic Front (PF).
The United Party for National Development fielded former Eastern Province deputy Permanent Secretary Eularia Zulu, MMD had Elias Phiri while Mr Ngoma re-contested the seat under the PF.
UNIP fielded Charles Kanyama with National Restoration Party floating Samuel Sikaonga.
