Government has launched the 2013 Zambia Demographic Health Survey (ZDHS) which will cost over KR48.3 million.
Speaking when he launched the survey, Community Development, Mother and Child Health Minister Joseph Katema explained that the survey was aimed at collecting information from members of the public that will be used to formulate a new health policy.
Dr. Katema said the survey was important in the provision of quality health servics as it assesses the needs of people in communities.
He disclosed that the main objective of the 2013 ZDHS was to provide useful information about the levels and trends in fertility, child mortality, family planning use, maternal and child health indicators which are necessary for the evaluation of the impact of existing health programmes.
Dr. Katema said the ZDHS has also been an important guide in monitoring the attainment of global targets such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
He said government recognizes the important role the ZDHS plays in measuring key health related indicators adding that it was for this reason that government was committed to the success of the programme.
And Central Statistical Office (CSO) Director John Kalumbi said this year’s ZDHS was targeting to reach 18,048 households and 44,129 individuals.
The 2007 survey was only targeting 8,000 households and 16,000 individuals.
Meanwhile, Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Country Director Lawrence Marum pledged his organization’s financial and moral support to the success of the 2013 survey.
Dr. Marum said the survey has come at the right time when the country was endeavoring to improve the delivery of health care.
He added that the ZDHS will help government to know what policies were working and how to change the failed ones.
