World Vision donates school materials to 33 Mumbwa schools
Mumbwa, June 15, ZANIS —-World Vision Zambia has donated teaching materials worth KR330, 000 to 33 schools in Mumbwa to improve literacy levels in the district.
Presenting the materials yesterday at Kanwanzhiba primary school about seven kilometers North of Mumbwa Boma, Programme Manager for Mumbwa, Wilfred Mufwambi said a research conducted last year shows that children of an average age of 12 had only 15 per cent display basic reading skills.
Mr Mufwambi explained that as a child focused organization, they engaged the Ministry of Education through the DEBS office in order to address the situation that was endangering the future development of the district.
He said World Vision Mumbwa has developed a coordinated plan to improve literacy levels in the district especially where it is active in Chiefdoms of Kabulwebulwe and Kaindu.
The Programme Manager pledged to continue investing in education as it is one of the critical pillars in fighting poverty.
Mr Mufwambi added that the institutional goal is to contribute to improved child learning outcomes which include increased proportion of children who complete primary education in a structured learning environment and improved functional levels of reading for adolescents so that they are ready for economic opportunities.
And receiving the donations on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Mumbwa District Commissioner Sunday Shamabanse said the gesture by World Vision was an investment for both the present and the future which will transform the lives of the children.
Mr Shamabanse added that the material will also help teacher retention and enhance optimism in maintaining excellence in service delivery.
The District Commissioner has since called upon the school authority to guard the material which has come to them like manna.
Among the items donated for each school include Read on course Kits, New Break through to literacy Kits, English text books for Grade 1 to 9 and English Teacher Guides for Grades 1 to 9.
Others are Mathematics text books from Grades 1 to 9 for pupils and teachers guides and dictionaries.
