Govt responds to headmen salary appeal

 

Nakonde, June 14, 2013, ZANIS…  The department of Chiefs and

Traditional Affairs in Nakonde district of Muchinga Province has

responded to calls by the traditional leaders in the area to consider

putting them on a monthly government salary.

 

According to a letter made available to the Zambia News and

Information Services (ZANIS) in Nakonde today by the Chiefs and

Traditional Affairs Officer Elijah Miyemba, government says it is aware of the

noble and effective roles village headmen play in the local governance of

the country.

 

Mr. Miyemba added that the need for traditional leaders’ remuneration

cannot be over emphasized but that such a request could have been

presented during the constitution review commission sittings.

 

Mr. Miyemba however said that Government is committed to ensuring

that it improves the welfare of traditional leaders in the area by

involving them in various developmental projects.

 

He also explained that the benefits of such programmes transcends

beyond a limited number of individuals in the community.

 

Mr Miyembe was responding to the appeal by the village headmen in Nakonde on the need for the

government to consider putting them on a monthly salary for the work

they do in the communities.

 

The headmen made the appeal during a meeting held at Chilolwa to

sensitize them on the dangers and effects of early marriages.

 

Chieftainess Nawaitwika of the Namwanga people has embarked on a

programme to educate her subjects on the need to promote the education

of the child.
