Lundazi, June 14, 2013, ZANIS—The Conservation Farming Unit has been engaged to develop and promote chemical free agriculture practices in order to fight effects of climate change in Lundazi.
Lundazi district Conservation Farming Unit Manager Clement Mwankotami has meanwhile challenged farmers in the area to start preparing for the 2013/2014 farming season if they were to improve their yields next year.
ZANIS in Lundazi reports that Mr Mwankontami was speaking to ZANIS during the District Agriculture and Commercial Show recently .
The theme of the show is ‘’Business in a changing environment ’’ .
Mr Mwankotami said Conservation farming was the only solution for small scale farmers in the district to improve their yields and household food security.
He further explained that the Conservation Farming Unit objectives are to promote the agriculture industry through conservation farming by changing farmer’s attitudes through trainings in all the eight chiefdoms of the district.
Mr Mwankotami observed that the training will impart knowledge on how best farmers can practice conservation type of farming especially that Lundazi is a draught prone area.
He said since 1996 CFU has been engaged in development and promotion of conservation agriculture practices not only in Zambia but also in other countries like Malawi, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania with financial support from the Norwegian government.
