Acqua-culture sector gains ground
Chipata, June 10, 2013, ZANIS….A senior officer in the ministry of agriculture and livestock
has stressed the need to promote, develop and revamp the aquaculture
industry in the country.
Joseph Chiti says the aquaculture sector has potential to make
significant contributions to the development of the agricultural
sector as it is targeted at encouraging diversification.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Chipata today, Mr. Chiti said this is why
there was need to encourage farmers to venture in to fishing farming
just like any other method in the agriculture industry.
Mr. Chiti who is leading a team of aquaculture research officers from
other parts of the country to eastern province disclosed that the
industry is slowly gaining ground in all parts of the country.
He explained that the researchers have embarked on a study tour of all
aqua research stations to have an on the spot check on the performance
of the stations.
Mr. Chiti stated that the team also wants to establish if the stations
are properly being utilized through their hatcheries to enhance fish
production in the country.
He noted that Zambia has six aqua stations that are currently doing
aquaculture research aimed at developing the sector.
Mr. Chiti noted that the research team is in eastern province to learn how
best the aqua-farming industry can be further developed in the country.
He said the province has less fish capturing centers but can be
developed by its hatchery producing fingerlings.
He further added that the team also wants to establish how fish
farming activities can be replicated in other areas where it is not
highly practiced.
