—The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) has commended government for maintaining the maize floor price at K65 per 50kg bag.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, MAZ President, Milan Sakala, said maintaining the price at K65 Will help avoid hiking of mealie meal prices by millers.
He, however, expressed concern that the high price of fuel may prevent the benefit of the low maize price trickling down to the ordinary Zambians.
Mr Sakala said high transport costs may prevent millers from selling mealie meal at a lower price as they have to meet their production costs.
He said his association has advised its members to determine the price at which they sell mealie meal depending on the costs incurred during production.
And Zambia National Farmers Union President, Jervis Zimba, said the union is still conducting a study on the proposed price, adding that it will issue a comprehensive statement on the matter once the study is complete.
