Government has today handed over a dredger worth KR7 million to Lunga district in Luapula Province.
The dredger will be used to clear canals in order to ease people’s water transport in the area.
Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Christopher Yaluma Mr. Yaluma, who handed over the dredger on behalf of government, said the Zambian water transport system has been neglected for a long time now.
Mr. Yaluma said it was for this reason that the current government has decided to purchase water equipment.
He said other parts of the country such as Mongu in Western Province and Chilubi Island would also be receiving the similar equipment.
Mr. Yaluma disclosed that government has a comprehensive plan to revamp the water transport system in the newly created district of Lunga.

Mr. Yaluma said the machine would also be temporary used in other wetlands in the country to remove weeds.
And receiving the donation, Minister of Local Government and Housing, Emerine Kabanshi thanked government for creating jobs through the provision of a dredger to her area.
Ms. Kabanshi, who is also Luapula PF Member of Parliament, said about 10 people would be employed to operate the dredger.
She said the dredger would ease the water transport system that people in her area have been using for many years now.
The dredger would be transported to Lunga District by the Ministry of Works and Supply on Friday this week.
