Great North road claims another life
Mpika, May 3, ZANIS ——-One man died on the spot in Mpika district of Muchinga province yesterday while three others sustained multiple body injuries when two vehicles collided head-on.
Muchinga province Police Commissioner Remmy Kajoba has confirmed the accident in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali today.
Mr Kajoba said that the accident which involved unregistered Toyota Sprinter and a Toyota Land cruiser Prado belonging to Tanzania Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA) happened around 10:00 hours near Chikwanda Village along the Great North Road in Mpika district.
The Police Commissioner explained that the accident happened when the driver of the Toyota Sprinter identified as Elias Mulambya, 27, of Katozi compound in Nakonde district with three passengers on board caused the accident due to improper overtaking resulting in a head-on collision with an on-coming Toyota Land cruiser Prado which was heading to Dar-es-salaam, in Tanzania.
Mr Kajoba identified the deceased as 31-year-old Julius Nguni of Mansa in Luapula province.
He added that the body of Nguni is currently lying in Mpika district hospital awaiting a post-mortem.
The driver of the Sprinter and another passenger are battling for their lives in Mpika district hospital while the driver of the Toyota Land cruiser Prado who suffered minor injuries was treated at the
Out-patient and later discharged.
Mr Kajoba has since cautioned motorists to be careful on the road and ensure that they strictly follow traffic rules in order to avoid fatal road accidents.
He said that drivers of unregistered vehicles from the port of Dar-es-salaam are in the habit of over speeding adding that these drivers want to quickly reach their destination and hand over the vehicle to the owner so that they can go and pick others.
