A teacher at Chinyunyu basic school in Rufunsa district has been arrested by police for administering a concoction of medicines on a pupil whom he allegedly impregnated in order for her to terminate the pregnancy.
Kennedy Moono, who allegedly impregnated a grade 10 pupil at the same school, is said to have forced her to drink a concoction in a bid to terminate the pregnancy when he discovered that he had impregnated the girl.
The expecting pupil was rushed to Chongwe district hospital where she is currently admitted and receiving medication.
Rufunsa District Commissioner Paul Kasongo confirmed the development in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.
Mr. Kasongo, who described the situation as unfortunate, said the teacher was currently in custody at Chinyunyu police.
He said it was sad that some teachers, who are trusted by the public, can engage into illicit activities with their pupils.
He said Moono’s behaviour was disturbing especially that he is a married man with two children.
Mr. Kasongo said such incidents present a bad image of the teaching profession and should not be condoned.
He regretted that the academic future of the girl, who has aborted, was now under threat because she was being sponsored by a nongovernmental organisation.
And Chongwe District Medical Officer Charles Msiska confirmed receiving the case at Chongwe district hospital.
Dr. Msiska said the girl was yesterday given Post Abortal Care (PACA) but was still under observation.
He added that the girl was currently on antibiotics and under comprehensive abortion care.
He has since condemned the abortion saying it was one of the major causes of maternal mortality in the country.
Dr. Msiska has meanwhile appealed to the public to seek medical advice before taking aborting so that qualified medical Doctors can approve or disapprove the intention.
