Nchelenge District Commissioner, Joseph Chisakula, has called on government to consider putting up a special fund for the running of the district.
Mr Chisakula says there is need for a special fund to the district if it is to run effectively across its large water bodies.
The District Commissioner says the ordinary budget to the district is too low to run a district like Nchelenge with large water bodies, saying water transport is too expensive to be managed in the ordinary budget.
ZANIS reports that the District Commissioner said this when Luapula Province Minister, Benson Kapaya, accompanied by the Provincial Deputy Permanent Secretary, Joyce Nsamba, paid a courtesy call on him.
Mr Chisakula said the district currently has a challenge of water transport at Kilwa and Chisenga islands, adding that lack of transport at the two islands has made it difficult to refer patients to St Paul’s Mission Hospital.
He added that there is need to acquire boats for the two islands to ease transportation challenges in the area.
And Luapula Province Minister, Benson Kapaya, said government is aware of the challenges that go with water transport.
Gen Kapaya said he decided to visit the areas to see for himself the challenges at the two islands in Nchelenge.
Meanwhile, Luapula Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Joyce Nsamba, has urged the Buildings Department to give a report on the construction works in the market.
Mrs Nsamba said the works on the market are not convincing describing them as shoddy.
Gen Kapaya and his entourage are in Nchelenge touring Kilwa and Chisenga islands.
