Poor fishing methods threaten Kalabo stocks
Kalabo, April 2, 2013, ZANIS —– The District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) in Kalabo is concerned about the high rate at which the local community in area was practicing bad fishing methods by using mosquito nets.
The concern was raised by members of the DDCC in a meeting chaired by Kalabo District Commissioner (DC) Irene Mate in Kalabo recently.
The DDCC members said that the bad fishing practice is now being used on all the rivers and other water bodies in Kalabo posing a threat to the fish which was slowly depleting.
The DDCC members suggested that the culprits who were in the trend of practicing bad fishing methods should be apprehended and prosecuted in order to protect the fish species for the future generation.
They appealed to the Fisheries department with its cooperating partner the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) in the area to conduct fish patrols throughout the year and not just during the fish ban period.
