Luapula chess tourney attracts over 30 players
Mansa, Mar 25/13, ZANIS ———–More than 30 players in Luapula Province have participated in the Luapula Closed Rating Chess Tournament.
The two-day Chess Tournament, held and sponsored by Henry Courtyard Lodge, draw participant from Chienge, Samfya and Mansa Districts and was organized to prepare players for the national tournament to be held this weekend at the same venue.
Speaking at the tournament yesterday, Zambia Chess Foundation Executive Director, Chanda Nsakanya, disclosed that the national tournament will be conducted in three categories of the National Team Trials, Zambia Closed, and National Trials for women.
Mr Chanda said the tournament has seen four players qualify for the National Team Trials, adding that four players from Malawi have been invited for the tournament.
He disclosed that Mumba Chilufya, who is the only female player in the tournament and a women’s candidate master rated as the strongest female player in the country, has also qualified for the National Team Trials in the ladies category.
And speaking during the award presentation, Henry Courtyard Representative, Chilufya Mukubulo, said his company is pleased to be associated with sponsoring various sports disciplines in the province.
Chilufya said it is part of the company’s social corporate responsibility programme to uplift the standards of sports.
The tournament was sponsored at a cost of KR 900,000,000 and attracted 34 participants with ten receiving various cash prices.
