Namwala District Commissioner Gevar Nsanzya  says the Patriotic Front government is committed to providing sustainable access to safe drinking water and sanitation  with the support and collaboration with its  partners.

Mr Nsanzya was speaking in a speech read for him by Namwala District Administrative officer Mr Godwin Sanjase at the celebrations to mark World Water Day held in Moobola Ward of Chief Muchila’s area.

He said that the government through Ministry of Local Government and Housing and cooperating partners is implementing the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme throughout the country.

Mr Nsanzya said the programme is aimed at improving access to clean and safe drinking water as well as adequate sanitation facilities.

The Namwala District Commissioner further said that government through the Ministry of Local Government and Housing has been sinking boreholes and other water points in order to improve access to clean water.

Mr Nsanzya disclosed that Namwala has seen improvement in water coverage from 53% in 2010 to about 75% in 2012 and this positive increase is attributed to good working relationship and cooperation the district is receiving in water resource management from cooperating partners.

The District Commissioner named some of partners that have come on board to assist the district in many developmental projects as DANIDA, UNICEF, HODI, The Catholic Diocese of Monze, World Vision and many others.

The DC has since appealed to Namwala residents to ensure that sanitation rules are observed such as use of pit latrines, washing hands with soap after using the toilet, boiling water and chlorinating it.

Mr Nsanzya has also commended the district for attaining Open Defecation Free (ODF) through construction and use of pit latrines in rural parts of the district.
