The Zambia Media Council (ZAMEC) has strengthened its governance system to maximize members’ participation in all processes of the council.

Media Liaison Committee (MLC) Chairperson Mickie Mumba said the move follows clear dissatisfaction among ZAMEC members on critical governance issues in the media council.

Mr. Mumba explained that members disagreed on the appointment of the National Governing Council (NGC) and the consensus building in all decision making matters.

He said in Lusaka today that his committee has been working tirelessly to ensure that ZAMEC members own the process and shape of the council to guarantee their inclusion in the constitution making process.

Mr. Mumba stated that the media council has since set March 29, 2013 as the date for the ZAMEC annual general meeting (AGM) at which the revised constitution would be amended by the general membership

He said the AGM will also examine the Media Liaison Committee’s annual report, the adoption and amendment of the ZAMEC constitution and the ratification of the national governing council nominees among other issues.

In May 2010, the AGM mandated the MLC to establish the ZAMEC and hand over its management once it was registered and operational.

The mandate was later confirmed at the July 2012 AGM at which members resolved to amend the revised constitution at its next sitting on March 28, 2013.
